We visited this place due to its high rank on this site. Normally, a place that's on Nevskij with a sign "Soviet Cafe" is a definite no-no for any experienced traveller. This time we gave it a chance, and this is how it went down.
The interior was rather blunt. The ideas were ok as such, but I personally felt that something was missing. And I kind of felt sorry for the lonely gold fish in the bowl..In general, the premises were clean but some people complained about the lavatories.
The food was, well, I guess Soviet (can't say for sure, though). We had different salads and meat dishes. One chicken dish was raw when brought in. The waiters handled that situation very well, points home for that. Other dishes were said to be OK in taste but rather small. The food was really, really basic stuff. Something like an attempt at home-cooked food made in a restaurant.
Service was ok, no special complaints or cheers (except for the raw chicken incident mentioned above). The prices were OK, I think.
All in all, we left the place a bit surprised. What was amongst the highest-rated places here seemed to me to be like my precognition told me having seen the sign on the street.
